Responses to Restrictions
Below are seven podcast episodes, organized by theme, that outline the findings of our research. These podcasts include clips from our interviews with the teachers, as well as our own analysis, to highlight the major ways that teachers are impacted by content restriction and how they respond to these challenges.
01 Introduction: Welcome to Class!
In our introductory episode, we explain our research goals and methods, as well as introduce our group members. Welcome to our podcast, Long Story Short: Teachers Want to Teach!
03 "Keeping Teachers Tired is a Form of Oppression": Structural Inequities
Not all schools have access to the same resources, and that impacts the priorities of the teachers, administrators, students, and parents. In this episode, Heather and Juliana talk about how these inequities influenced the teachers we interviewed, and what the implications are for the content that is taught.
05 "Nobody's Hiding Anything": Parents and Restrictions
This episode highlights parent involvement in classroom content. Madeline and Emma talk about teachers' experiences with opt-out forms, opt-in forms, and parent responses to what is taught in their children's classes.
07 "I'm Trying to Stay Critically Hopeful": Freedom Dreams
In this conclusion episode, each group member talks about their takeaways from this project, as well as their hopes for the future of public education as it pertains to content restriction and book bans. What's your freedom dream?
02 "I Start With the Standards": Appealing to the District
Every teacher we interviewed told us that the first things they consider when planning a lesson are the district's standards. In this episode, Heather and Juliana talk about the advantages and disadvantages of this and how it impacts teachers' lesson planning— especially when their curricula are outdated.
04 "Are You Gonna Back Us Up?": Administration and School Culture
In this episode, Madeline and Emma talk about different teachers' experiences with support from their administrations and their school cultures, and how that impacts the ways they navigate content restriction.
06 "I Let My Students Talk": Classroom Libraries and Student-Led Conversations
Letting the kids do the talking is one way that teachers navigate content restriction. In this episode, Maddy, Emma, and Madeline talk about student choice in classroom libraries and student-led conversations as tools in this process.
